@benroyce@mastodon.social Yes, Russia has always been a pretty nasty place. In moral terms it is not part of Western civilization. However, it is well-documented that New York finance funded the early Bolsheviks when the latter were about to go broke. The USA also assisted Russia's 1930s arms buildup, which was paid for by stealing and selling Ukraine's food. And in the 1990s, Western-backed oligarchs plundered Russia's oil and uranium, among other things. Putin is popular partly because he made that stop.

@benroyce@mastodon.social Saddam Hussein was also quite the asshole, and the USA supported him right up until he invaded Kuwait. The Taliban were always murderous thugs, but we supported them when they were fighting the Russians. There is even a 1980s Bond movie with the Taliban as the good guys! The USA and UK have a long history of supporting friendly dictators who enable financial plunder. Then either the dictator turns on us, or a worse bastard who hates the USA takes over. Putin is the worse bastard.
