@jon@social.vivaldi.net I use vivaldi and consider it an excellent browser. It works in tandem with Proton VPN and is simple and clean. Thanks for pointing out the key features that people admire.

@jon@social.vivaldi.net the features you don’t build can definitely be more important than the ones that you do. Choosing not to build something requires conscious effort, so it’s also often not easier than building it.

@jon@social.vivaldi.net, certainly I don't use a lot of the features and tools of the browser, because as retiree I don't need it. For me Vivaldi in general is the definitive browser, because it's respect my preferences, because of the community, support and the user centred ethics of Vivaldi, which for me are the most important features. In all the years non of the other browsers I tested (almost all) offer this.

@jon@social.vivaldi.net Funny enough, one of the first reasons I moved away from Chrome to Opera, then Vivaldi was built in mouse gestures! Such a simple thing but it is just one of the many reasons why Vivaldi has become my default.

@jon@social.vivaldi.net Was there a poll about why people aren't using Vivaldi?

@jon@social.vivaldi.net Is it possible to get older builds of Vivaldi that will run on older (as in El Capitan old!) versions of Mac OSX?

@jon@social.vivaldi.net A side note and just an FYI. At , the table mentions that Opera has PWA support. It does not. Something to correct when the person that handles that page has time.

@jon@social.vivaldi.net I need to test it for accessibility. Because to me as a blind user the first and the only reason to use or not use a solution is accessibility. All the rest is not that important.

@jon@social.vivaldi.net I still use Firefox because ublock origin is the greatest thing that mankind has ever created and I refuse to use a lesser version of it.

@jon@social.vivaldi.net Yes to all of those reasons AND the mail client is genuinely better than many dedicated apps. It's become my daily desktop mail app.

@jon@social.vivaldi.net Given that Opera was originally built on new features, not values, this is rather interesting. I remain a Firefox user for now, because I believe it's important with more than one rendering engine; monoculture is seldomly good. And sadly, monoculture is happening to browsers. I grok that Chromium is a *good* product, I just want there to be more than *one* good product :)

@jon@social.vivaldi.net add "follow tabs" to that. Good grief that is a game changer on Wikipedia.

@jon@social.vivaldi.net I like the browser but I have two complains. - uBlock doesn't work anymore (I know it's not directly your fault but it's a big minus for me) - I can't turn off the sidebar. I prefer a minimal experience and every time I download something the side panel opens and when I close it the bar remains there. Edit: I solved this last issue turning off "Display downloads automatically" and ticking "Save files to the default position"

@DenOfEarth@mas.to 2026-09-19 13:47
@jon@social.vivaldi.net It looks like uBlock is not available because Vivaldi is a fork of Chrome, and the latter's parent company deliberately broke the API, hence Vivaldi baking in its own ad-blocker instead. Someone please correct me if I got any of this wrong or sideways. https://mastodon.social/@lisamelton/117214661957021007

@jon@social.vivaldi.net I don't like AI, but I don't understand people in this context. Implementing features can be ethical. A feature that’s local and respects user privacy is fine. A feature that requires registration somewhere and is optional is annoying, but I don’t see a problem with it. When I tested Vivaldi, the browser had an email client, but I just didn’t use it because it was inconvenient. That’s all. Optional features aren’t a problem

@jon@social.vivaldi.net EU and no Ai are my top reasons too, but i like the features it has a lot.

@jon@social.vivaldi.net It's funny how the thing that is least important to me is the number one reason others choose Vivaldi and the (two) most important reason(s) for me gets the fewest votes. And I only ticked those three. (Doesn't mean, I dislike the other options but they are not a dealbraker either.)

@jon@social.vivaldi.net I like because of the values and the community of people and other projects and companies you connect on this community. Because of Vivaldi I created my Mastodon account and from there I got to know Proton, and other European alternatives. Started homelabing too. Thank you! :)

@brmkstr@mastodon.nl 2026-09-25 19:25
@jon@social.vivaldi.net For me the rich feature set is attractive. I use Vivaldi all the time. However, most persons that I tried to convince to use Vivaldi are overwhelmed with all the options, and they don’t like it. Therefore, I believe that it would be helpful if there would be a straightforward option to get the most simple and clean GUI possible. In that way potential novel users will not be overwhelmed and can learn in time what else can be done. Most people in my environment are eager to get away from Google and a very simple Vivaldi GUI would help, in my opinion.

@jon@social.vivaldi.net All things considered, Firefox still offers better privacy protection than Vivaldi out of the box. When it comes to breaking up big tech monopolies, it sounds a bit hollow coming from Vivaldi when, at the same time, you’re building your browser on Google technology. Your browser is "assembled" in Europe, but build on top of non european tech from a big tech company
