and if you wanted a gender-neutral way to say "this is my friend", you might need to say "das ist ein_e freund_in von mir" or "das ist eine befreundete person" something. but: some people use english terms in place of german terms. so, "das ist mein friend" might just be the solution to all of our problems

and it's not even like "das ist mein freund" always means someone's your partner! maybe it differs from region to region, or from generation to generation, not sure. i'm pretty sure i've heard people say "das ist mein freund :)", not expecting people to think they're referring to a romantic partner at all
