The #selfhosting journey continues. When I setup my #linux server, I went with #docker Desktop. I am now ready to migrate to the Docker engine. Aside from a few less than helpful Reddit posts, I am not finding any guides on doing this. Everything is built using docker compose, so that should help. It seems like the path is Backup my containers > Uninstall Docker desktop > Install docker engine > import containers. Does this seem right? It sure would be nice if there was an easy migration utility.

  • @potentengineer@techhub.social if you’ve set your docker compose files so that your data and configuration directories are outside the containers and volume mounted inside, then you can just copy the docker compose files and said data/configuration directories to your new machine; docker-compose pull for each compose file will get you ready to go. Without knowing more about what services you use I can’t really say more, but this is how I migrated some image file hosting, an rss aggregator, and a bare couchDB container across installs.
