@dangillmor@mastodon.social No, I don't remember that. "Google" is not and has never been a person and we do ourselves and humans in general a disservice by attributing to "it" goals or ethics. There are *people* who own and control the machine name "Google" and they have names and addresses.

@dangillmor@mastodon.social If you would not attribute first-person intentionality, and the ability to feel sadness, or shame, to an LLM -- which of course you should not -- you should also deny that language to the financial-shield fiction that is a "corporation" like the so-called "Google". One might as well try to negotiate with SARS-CoV-2. The machine does what it must. It is a plutotropic automaton.

@jwz@mastodon.social @dangillmor@mastodon.social But nobody is forced to take responsibility for the damage they do in the name of the company. That's the problem.

@jwz@mastodon.social @dangillmor@mastodon.social People ask the government to create a whole ass fictitious person for them and then pretend like that non-person has moral agency and they can’t be blamed for its actions. Wait holy shit. Y’all. Shit. It’s happening again.

@jwz@mastodon.social @dangillmor@mastodon.social I maintain that American English is worse than British/international English in that we (Americans) refer to corporate and legal entities and groups in the singular, whereas others use the plural. E.g. Google is behaving unethically vs. Google are behaving unethically. In the latter there’s a subconscious shift that alludes to people running it as opposed to being a thing in and of itself.
