Is there a project to bring back the NewtonOS to any kind of smartphone? It’s written entirely in C++, so it shouldn’t be impossible. My Newton is getting old lately. #newton #apple #pda #retrocomputing #vintagetech #retrotech

@bigmike@ruhr.social Not exactly what you want, but it should be possible to run the Einstein Newton emulator on recent phones with acceptable performance. I could imagine that it’s feasible to also run it on a minimal Linux kernel + userland configuration. https://github.com/pguyot/einstein The NewtonOS source code was never published (and hasn’t leaked as far as I know), so a direct port is currently not possible without putting a lot of effort into decompiling the code.

@bigmike@ruhr.social are you aware of https://github.com/newtonresearch/newton-framework ? Can't vouch for it, I have neither a Newton nor a Mac OS X machine, but the general approach seems to make sense. Migrating it to a different platform may be a bit difficult.
