There's bike infrastructure, and then there’s Dutch bike infrastructure. #Hovenring, the World's 1st suspended bike path roundabout (although some Norwegians I know dispute that…) #cities #BikeLanes #urbanism #bikes #Dutch

@BrentToderian@mastodon.online I've visited the Hovenring quite by accident. I was surprised that it is kind of on the outskirts of the city in a more car-centric area of development. Such a gorgeous piece of design, I just assumed it would something showcased near the centre of a city.

@BrentToderian@mastodon.online I am embarrassed it's taken us so long to do this! More.

@BrentToderian@mastodon.online I am going to be honest I am not sure if I really understand why we are celebrating this. Is this not just a bicycle pedestrian bridge?

@BrentToderian@mastodon.online This solution (?) to the bike/car interface seems overbuilt, a monument to architecture rather than an efficient (direct) and effective (safe) way for enabling human powered movement.

@BrentToderian@mastodon.online while it is a sexy piece of architecture and can be celebrated as something positive, it's also quite unnecessary/overengineered for bicycles to have roundabouts, especially in a low traffic area. This increases travel time and distances, and could easily have been a simple 4-way junction. It's a hard discussion to have, because it's a cool piece of infra, but it also begs the question if it's truly what cycling needs... 😂

@BrentToderian@mastodon.online the major bike and pedestrian multi-use pathway in #PeterboroughON, where it crosses any road has signs like this... And, startlingly, the cars have no indication whatsoever, you're just supposed to run across multiple lanes whenever there's a break in traffic (traffic does NOT stop for crossers). WAIT FOR GAP = "May the odds be ever in your favour"

@BrentToderian@mastodon.online it's not OK when it freezes only slightly. Suspended skating rings are not a place for cycling...

@BrentToderian@mastodon.online while being a great piece of infrastructure, it still places cars as the oprimary citizen. In a flat country like the Netherlands cycling up three to four meters is considered a hill already, and people will take alternative routes if available.

@BrentToderian@mastodon.online I lived in The Netherlands almost 6 years and thanks to the bike infrastructure and bike culture was the most happy and beautiful transport experience ever in my life. In my home town, in Spain, try to use the bike is just an extreme dangerous activity.
