@yojimbo@masto.hackers.town Both options, actually. Hashtags are kinda small communities that are focused, but I *really* want to give the option for people to filter out what they don't want to be seeing.

@yojimbo@masto.hackers.town A little bit of option 2, and a lot of missing option #MetaCommentary

@yojimbo@masto.hackers.town I use hashtags mostly to help folks filter posts but also to make posts a bit easier to find (for others and for myself) Some servers don't have full search (mine doesn't) but they do have hashtag search.

@yojimbo@masto.hackers.town I don't know about "tags". "Tags" makes me think of special pre-defined generic categories selected via drop-down menus. I use hashtags as an originator and a recipient. I use hashtags as an originator to participate in communal events (%Caturday, %Bloomscrolling), to help people filter my posts (%USPol, %LLMs), and to provide a sense of context for the content (like %GetOffMyLawn to indicate "this a rant, not to be taken that seriously). I also use them as a recipient to bring me content I wouldn't otherwise see (via following), to understand what's trending (via search), to filter content, and to get a better sense of other peoples' context. Hashtags are flexible and used for many things. That is their charm.
