> Across Australia, older parents, grandparents, and great-grandparents are looking back at the ease with which they bought their first homes, and questioning whether the country’s decades-long slide in affordability can be reversed for the sake of younger generations. “The supercharging of housing as an asset rather than a place to live should never have happened in the first place and had to be unwound to help our society become more equitable.” https://www.theguardian.com/australia-news/2026/sep/20/house-prices-housing-crisis-older-younger-generations-australia

@phocks@bne.social When housing was more affordable both major parties were significantly more left wing. We had public housing, owned and managed by Governments which they sold on too lower income families. And tax was much fairer. Under the Menzies Liberal Government for example the highest tax bracket for the wealthy was something like 64%. Today he would be labelled Communist.

@phocks@bne.social Totally agree. We should never have allowed #Howard to kick off the #MumAndDadBank thing. That I now consider my home to be my child’s financial safety net after I’m gone because everything is so expensive these days and wages are not keeping up is indicative of the #WeatlhInequity built into our economic system. The transfer of wealth to the #Rich and #RentierClass is unsufferable and antisocial. #AusPol #Antifa #TaxTheRich #TaxGasExports

@phocks@bne.social and the scary part is it was NOT easy! They scrimped and saved to get the deposit, and then spent years paying it off - those years last century with 15% interest rates were not fun! Now its just not possible. Example: i mortgaged a tiny one bedroom flat in my very early 20s for 70K. Its now worth $900K. I am earning 5 times as much, not 12 times as much - theres no way my kids could duplicate that! :(
