as I am getting locked out of more and more of services because I refuse to give out my phone number to evil people I am beginning to question if sum total of popularization of MFA isn't actually a negative. It's not "hey would you like to imply MFA and would you like that to be a secondary email or a hardware key?" its "give us your phone number or personal information or we lock you out of this service which you and your friends have been stupid enough to depend on" got off track at some point: evil companies use MFA as an excuse to extract personal info from you (such a phone number (which now in EU is tied to your identity - Stalin would cry tears of joy was he alive!) and non masked IP). ...or email addresses that I have lost access to due to.. you guessed it!
