Imagine your species name being a mistake. This is the Cuban Spiny Ant, Polyrhachis cubaensis. It lives in South Africa, because of a labelling error. Cuba does not have any Polyrhachis ants. #Ants #Insects #Polyrhachis

@alexwild@mastodon.online I once thought that all of these things had to be written down, well organized, somewhere. But instead I keep finding rabbit holes. Today's mystery? Why does this chart say Camponotus planatus is from Cuba, but iNaturalist says it's introduced there? https://antwiki.org/wiki/Camponotus_Species_by_Subgenus I will add the "Cuban Polyrhachis" to my list of confusing things about the natural history of ants.

@alexwild@mastodon.online Imagine your species name is a mistake. The Homo Sapiens. Thought to be knowing. Turns out it does not. Edit: @ngons@mathstodon.xyz had the same idea. Only quicker.

  • @alexwild@mastodon.online wait...it lives in South Africa because of a labelling error? that seems unfair. i think it should be allowed to live in Cuba. plus, Cuba doesn't have any Polyrhachis ants, so it's a win/win. not to mention, the South African ants are now going to think they're colonizers

  • @alexwild@mastodon.online Asclepias syriaca, Common Milkweed, has nothing to do with Syria and never did. Linnaeus can be forgiven for doing the best he could with new world species, I suppose.

  • @alexwild@mastodon.online Cuba also doesn't have any oil or economy, so that tracks.
