In my totally representative sample size of 3 bikes, I've never had cable trouble, either gear or brake. That's bikes from 1988, 1992, 1993 and 2001 with probably 30000 miles between them (one with at least 15000 commute miles). And they all spent 13 years of their life living in a side alley under a bike cover, so not even in particularly amenable conditions. Brake pads and chains are another matter...
