I just had a coworker literally use the excuse “we’ve done it that way for 25 years and it works fine, so there’s no need to change it now” My man, you’re relying on the frontend(s) to do business logic and send sane results via the API to the backend, which will happily accept any old thing no matter how nonsensical it is. There is ABSOLUTELY a need to change it now.
