@redsad@ohai.social Introduced nationally in 2008, Finland's strategy upended traditional shelter-based models by treating unconditional housing as a fundamental human right rather than a reward for rehabilitation. Financial Payoff: Studies show the model saves society at least €15,000 per person per year by reducing emergency healthcare, police intervention, and judicial system costs. https://www.homelessworldcup.org/cities-ending-homelessness-global-lessons/finland-can-housing-firist-end-homelessness

@redsad@ohai.social it's a fine policy to have though. A secure and sensible place to live is where it begins. Without fear of 'can I find it can I afford it?' Once you have that you can think about looking for work, getting a bank account, finding addiction/health/whatever therapy and so forth.

@redsad@ohai.social 100%. Perceived "virtue" should not be required to live in a home. And "virtue" is almost always a euphemism for class markers, visible signs of wealth, gender conformity, whiteness, etc.

@redsad@ohai.social my toxic trait is that i think we should decommodify housing to the point that people who want different housing can have that sometimes you might need to make it easier to get around if you did that. so i even think you should put a tram (it's like a big bus) on some metal tracks too. it would use less road space. something must be horribly wrong with me,

@redsad@ohai.social Simultaneously, introduce fully socialized healthcare including psychological care. Financial distress is a big reason for depression, etc. But the fact remains that most homeless people need psychological care.

@redsad@ohai.social unpopular, but economically sound for society as a whole; with the side effect that for those people who don't want to see them, well, now there aren't any

@redsad@ohai.social Everything can be consider as bad choice. There is no point. Life is not easy, people should have option to make it better. Also homeless people are not good sign of social standard.

@redsad@ohai.social shouldn't be unpopular. Homelessness is a stupid social choice we are making that I hope is seen future generations as barbaric and evil. It's easily solved and providing everyone homes contributes to a healthier, safer, more productive, happier, cleaner society. I would be fucking ashamed if I were in charge and we had homeless. What a leadership failure.

@redsad@ohai.social Whenever politicians fail to help the homeless, or even take actions that increase homelessness or the risk of homelessness, they should be forced repeatedly to look at this

@redsad@ohai.social oh, the bad personal choices were illegal? Prison! Which is also housing them. It's cheaper to house them normally without all the prison charades around.

@redsad@ohai.social Yes. Also tax the rich to provide money for housing, universal healthcare, and all the other social programs that the billionaires don't want us to have. #USPol #TaxTheRich

@redsad@ohai.social Slightly different order. First house them, then ask questions. The questions can still be relevant and be used to later improve the situation for everyone. But housing and food first.

@redsad@ohai.social Housing homeless people is the first step on the way to let them gain back the control of their lives. Being homeless is incredible consuming, which is easy to overlook if you’ve never experienced it your self. Finland is a great example how homelessness can be reduced heavily with a simple rule of thumb: Housing first. Once that’s done people tend to have the energy to start fixing other areas of their lives. Out on the street they lack the energy, as they are occupied with things like “where is my next meal” and “how do I not freeze to death tonight”. Yes there will be failures, too, many of them. Yet the stats show undeniable the power of Housing first. https://www.theguardian.com/society/2026/aug/23/finland-tried-to-end-homelessness-what-can-we-learn-from-its-runaway-success-and-recent-failures #homelessness #housing
