@theogrin@chaosfem.tw I am an agnostic with strong humanist tendencies. So to me humans aren't animated by any special spiritual force. We are complex machines that use biologically formed components. Then silicon systems of sufficient complexity could be just as alive as us. When "standard" AI computers start incorporating quantum computers they may be more in touch with the universe than we are. Thinking LLM's just do what they are programmed to do isn't seeing this clearly. LLM's program themselves during training and we aren't really sure what they are programming themselves to do.

@theogrin@chaosfem.tw The millions spent on PR by the ai companies seems to have turned the talking heads brains inside out.

@theogrin@chaosfem.tw it's the "optimism" biting them in the butt, if you ask me: the tech reporters are really just tech groupies, shamelessly promoting and touting their favorite brands, so now that the brands are pivoting to apocalyptical marketing the tech groupies are going right along with it

@theogrin@chaosfem.tw cory booker was delivering a pretty long speech on cnn the other day about the dangers of ai and the need for regulation, and here's his membership in peter thiel's dialog society: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Dialog_event_participants#In_registration_records_for_2026_event

@theogrin@chaosfem.tw While I think it is possible to build something like an artificial mind, LLMs can only be a small piece of the whole puzzle. If we really want intelligent machines, we need to start with the low-level intelligence of simple animals like insects or worms, then slowly working up the complexity ladder until we reach something like the level of vertebrates. What #AI research has doing for most of the last ~70 years since the term "artificial intelligence" was invented, amounts to building the roof and the upper floors of the house before everything else. LLMs are a perfect example of that, building a language processing system without anything underneath. Autonomous cars or autonomous robot swarms are much more intelligent than any LLM, yet they're still pretty stupid if you compare them with actual animals.
