@mjd@mathstodon.xyz I don’t agree about the calculator. It never took much reason to (1) argue that calculation is not the heart of maths, (2) calculators are a useful tool with well-circumscribed range of reliability, and (3) it is nonetheless useful for some people to be good at manual calculation. See? I did it in a tweet.

@jonmsterling@mathstodon.xyz @mjd@mathstodon.xyz Whether ubiquity of calculators damaged brains depends on whether wisdom was generally applied regarding (3) or whether they were overused. It is not enough to simply observe that there hypothetically exists an optimal appropriate use pattern of a device.
