@azonenberg@ioc.exchange @gigabecquerel@chaos.social @dtl@8bitorbust.info as said twice, the defects themselves are sufficiently many orders of magnitude smaller than the tolerance that the local deformation has to "propagate" so much that resulting deformation will even out. Even if the local surface grain is less active, the amount of variance in surrounding grains just will even that out. Stop chasing that ghost of deformation!
