And I think you did manage to get the metal texture, congratulations. (Now I'm curious. Was that a brush?)
I hear you on the layers. They are key! Layers have saved me so many times.
Love the final version of your cover, that's something to be proud of. (And so much better than AI slop.)

I'm not 100% sure how your designer did it (because I'm reverse-engineering it). But I think it's this, which is how I did it:
