@RosethornRanger@spore.social I'd add that Not using accessibility tools when you, "only need them sometimes", can directly result in more extreme, long-term disability. I danced through severe arthritis and spinal deterioration until I was 32, and I was a"hero". By 40, I couldn't walk more than a few meters on my own. Please listen to your body and do what it tells you to do, even if you feel weak for it, even if someone else makes you feel bad, even if you're really scared. It's entirely worth it. <3

my eyes have different refractive powers, and I have gotten glasses for them several times over the years, but never wore them because the solution to that is bifocals and I didn't want to look like an old person, so I kept lying to myself that my vision is fine, actually, because I can read stuff without help. The eye doctor even said that I didn't need them, but it's close I'm getting close enough to 50 now that my eyes have decided to drift further apart in what they can focus on, which I can still deal with, but I was tired of paying for eye coverage on my insurance and not using it, so I got new bifocals a year ago and decided to start wearing them at work. I expected the clearer vision, and I got it, but I also didn't realize that a big reason that I felt so tired at the end of a long day was because my eyes were struggling to focus, which is exhausting. Just admitting that I should wear glasses at work has made such a huge difference that I'm annoyed with myself that I didn't do this two decades ago

@RosethornRanger@spore.social We appreciate that you mention smaller things like cut-proof gloves, rather than the big disability aids that most people would immediately think of. Accessibility can mean a lot of things and many incredibly useful tools are available without a prescription. For us, it means setting the minimum font size in our browser to 14 points because our near vision isn't what it used to be. It means preferring high-visibility colors just because they scan more easily. It means using dark mode where possible because we're photosensitive. All of those small tweaks can make a big difference.

@RosethornRanger@spore.social so true. I can see well enough to walk without a white cane but using one makes my life so much easier. I’ve started to accept help in public transport so I’m not too tired when I arrive.

@RosethornRanger@spore.social I cant hear people if they don’t literally shout and often cant understand what they say. I cant see things that are either too close or to far, and my vision is essentially limited to a fixed focus from 20-25cm. And I can’t remember things even immediately after someone says something. I am deaf, dumb, and blind

@RosethornRanger@spore.social been thinking about getting a cane for a while, just in case my balance craps out as it does, but then i'd need to learn how to use one… #percy.txt #there's-also-the-swag-factor #i'm-currently-wearing-a-waistcoat.

@nandor@universeodon.com @RosethornRanger@spore.social I just wanted to thank you for taking the time to tell me this. I'm acutely aware (from being a sometimes-lurker), that it takes energy to respond, even when you read something that helps. Gave me a boost knowing you were going to take a little more care, given how important that is and how hard it seems to be for All of us hehe. Thank you again! :)

@nandor@universeodon.com Thank you! Hey, most of us need a little skootch in the right direction from time to time, (at least I do hehe), and what matters is how we take those lessons forward. I'm grateful to everyone whose eyes are opened to the imbalances in our world, and who is ready to act. :)
