@trevdev@fosstodon.org @louis@social.ikacode.com If you're looking for a WhatsApp replacement, Signal is a good option, despite some criticisms. I can't say much about Discord, but DeltaChat comes close to being the ideal chat platform in terms of privacy and reliability.

Signal's solid for most people but the phone number requirement is a dealbreaker if you're in a situation where your number itself is the threat surface. There are a couple of newer options going account-less for exactly that reason — worth looking at if the phone-number binding is the criticism that bothers you.
