@rancholibertad@climatejustice.social Not in the USA, and a city-dweller with no garden, but reading this has coloured in some of the bigger picture for me! (Though I worry about their aquifer)

  • @SusiArnott@mastodon.green I'm so glad! For the record -- we're worried about the aquifer, too, and all of our work aims to thread the increasingly thin needle of: - Ecological cycles cannot heal without trees - Water will continue to run off and evaporate without trees, rendering the little rain we do get nearly useless - Trees require supplemental water to establish in a timeframe that is useful to other species - But using that supplemental water is obviously done at a risk -- and ultimately we recognize that we are a proof of concept site and unless others see the value and success in what we're doing and start doing this on a larger scale or help us fund doing this on a larger scale it will not have the intended effect long-term. At the same time, though, as other ecosystems careen towards the stage of desertification and soil collapse that we're living in, this work MUST be done to show others how to do it in their own lands. If already desertified land is simply abandoned, relatively soon (in a geological sense) there will be very little inhabitable land left -- and therefore much less life on this planet.
