Unfortunately, I don't have enough clarity about what their roadmap will do to create a sustainable business. The campaign indicates finishing work on Session Protocol v2 and the Session Pro paid power user features. The Pro fees go straight to the SESH token economy that powers the messaging infrastructure, which makes sense. I wish STF could articulate whether they would be making an annual donation campaign of $1M or present a clearer business plan for how Session will become sustainable. 2/n

We need privacy alternatives to thrive, but we also haven't figured out how to make them sustainable. It's a common problem in free and open source software. Unless a few enterprises or state entities have a need for support contracts and can offset costs to offer the free service to the public, it feels like donation-based and grant-based models can't weather storms of recessions. 3/n

I have a Session account, but I don't have anyone to talk to on it. My privacy advocacy work has had more success in driving adoption to Signal over SMS, iMessage, WhatsApp, and Telegram. I think the bridge from other contacts-based tools has been a force multiplier for Signal. That Session users are effectively starting from blank slate is a steep hill to climb for adoption. Here's what I'm doing next regarding Session... 4/n

I am donating $5 to Session as a show of support. I don't really get value from Session today (advocacy and gamedev discussions better in public here on Masto!) but I'm willing to chip in. If you'd like to support the project, I encourage you to do so. I'm also posting my public Session profile here. Add me and send me a note about recent wins or hurdles in reaching your data privacy goals. Session account ID: 05dba11304b9be8c7dc59ed591b25cedf81a05a516650ef55220abbf84e7c7b771 5/5
