I can't remember where I got this information, but I heard that it's best to leave as much of the stem as possible when harvesting winter squashes. Here can be seen that small pieces of the vine were left attached so that the entire stem is intact. I believe it's supposed to help with long-term storage. BTW, this is a mini variety of butternut called "Butter Baby". We like them.

@richrollgardener@toot.wales Pretty! How do you know when it's time to harvest them? Do the stems dry like that while still attached? For the first time in 3 years of trying I actually have fruit, so I'm very excited 😊

@richrollgardener@toot.wales I try to leave about a 2in length. Which definitely works better than cutting it all the stem...

Leaving the stem intact when harvesting winter squashes like the Butter Baby butternut could help prevent moisture from entering the fruit, potentially improving its storage life.
