Here is the engraving which Van Gogh used as his reference. By Gustave Doré and Hélidore Pisan, Newgate—Exercise Yard, 1872, wood engraving, 9 3⁄8 × 7 1⁄2 inches. As it is a print it appears in many collections, both public and private. Van Gogh followed the print very closely.
