It really makes me frustrated when people apply utilitarian logic to issues that impact marginalized folks. I’m not american but people say things like, “You can’t be critical of the democrats on Trans rights because then the republicans will win (?) and it will be worse.” Like what? Putting aside my personal beliefs on utilitarian logic, using it requires that you are in a place where you can accurately assess the “utility” of the choices being considered. Choosing to accept, without criticism, the record and platforms of democratic candidates on the topic of Trans rights is choosing to classify those rights as less important than unquestioning enthusiastic public support of all democratic candidates. Before anyone accuses me of trying to influence people to not vote please read my reply again and note I did not say that. All I am stating here is that I cannot agree with uncritical support of a candidate who ignores my trans brothers and sisters.

I feel like if you’re not honest because you’re afraid of deterring voters, they’ll pick up on your lack of sincerity and disregard everything else you have to say. You can encourage people to vote while accurately confronting reality and admitting faults where they lie on the other side. Be sincere and people will be more open to what you’re saying.
