@anthropy@mastodon.derg.nz @dalias@hachyderm.io @Em0nM4stodon@infosec.exchange There's now more not traffic than human traffic on the internet. Get rid of the bots and there's plenty of capacity for years to come. Plus, even at the consumer level, people are fed up when stuff doesn't work because of a server outage. XBox gaming had a massive outage again this week because the authentication and saved settings servers were down. A pretty good reason to incenivize people switching from Microsoft flight sim "stream the world terrain data and other visuals in flight simulator to X-Plane, with only a registration check. Even with the recent price hikes, storage is historically cheap, so download terrain maps once and you don't have to worry about Azure being down.

@barbra@social.vivaldi.net @dalias@hachyderm.io @Em0nM4stodon@infosec.exchange I wish. I am all for selfhosting, but I have yet to see someone successfully host something like a large scale Peertube without bleeding tons of money. Storage is only one part of the equation, and even that one's expensive. despite all the conspiracy theories about the bot internet, there are actual people driving most of the demand, either directly or indirectly (e.g Search), not to mention stuff like Streaming or Youtube and Maps is unhostable for most people.
