Valya Marinova
'21st century sex strikes, social reproduction struggles and liberal feminism'
This talk explores struggles of social reproduction under patriarchy and western feminist responses to women's strategic sex strikes.
Valya Marinova (SOAS) starts from a broad survey of existing literature on historic and recently reported sex strikes, with analysis of sex strike coverage by contemporary media, and finally presents results from ethnographic interviews conducted with participants in three case studies: Turkey 2001, Cameroon 2003 and Colombia 2011.
This project not only rectifies western media's sex-strike sensationalism by providing local context, but also scrutinises the popular opinion that sex strikes represent a backward consolidation of patriarchal gender norms. Through interviews with community leaders and a foundation of feminist theory, we will see how sex strikes function as part of the struggle for resources of social reproduction under patriarchy. We ask, why is it that Western liberal feminism disregards this tactic?
