@iris_meredith@mastodon.social Looking at the examples you give, I keep thinking of "launch and leave" culture. Or in this day and age maybe more like "slop n drop" culture. One happy path, plenty of CRUD operations, opiniated but uninspiring design. Only 9.99 per month.

@iris_meredith@mastodon.social Do you have opinions on whether the depth is due to not having a package management story? With languages that have it knowing The Core Language gets you maybe 10% of the way there.

@iris_meredith@mastodon.social This was sooo satisfying to read! I kept expecting it to end shortly like most tech-ish blog posts do, but then it just continued! I ended up sharing it w a few people not even very technical bc you did a great job describing WHY depth matters.

@iris_meredith@mastodon.social If you haven't seen it, I think the Rich Hickey YouTube video "Simple Made Easy" has a slightly different perspective on the same problems. Now, I think many problems in computing are intrinsically complex. The RoundCube webmail client is 130k lines of PHP, and I bet no feature-complete alternative in any language could manage to match it for less than 20k. But so many tools in our field just throw more complexity at a problem instead of pursuing simplicity.
