@sundogplanets@mastodon.social AI is terrible for citations. Citations are a huge part of my job (I edit at a journal). All of us journal people are trying to send up the alarm about how much AI screws up citations, and no one is listening. If you ask AI to format your citations it will mess up all your DOIs and make things that look right but are not at all. JAMA has written a thing on this, which is polite and journal-speak for "oh god, oh god, do not let AI touch your citations": https://jamanetwork.com/journals/jama/fullarticle/2852772

@rednikki@toot.boston @sundogplanets@mastodon.social This week someone told me they just throw it all in an LLM to figure out their citations. I almost flipped the table.

@rednikki@toot.boston @sundogplanets@mastodon.social And a spokesperson for one of the hospital systems in Mass today said that ChatGPT is perfectly fine for summarizing your medical records for the clinical team because "it gives citations and links for everything it says."

@rednikki@toot.boston @librarysquirrel@sunny.garden @sundogplanets@mastodon.social As a scientist and the person who some time ago was responsible at Chegg for the teams behind EasyBib, CTFM (CiteThisForMe) and others and recently the senior engineering manager at Overleaf I'm deeply worried and saddened.

@sundogplanets@mastodon.social @rednikki@toot.boston Yeah sorry about my now-deleted post and bringing out folks who won’t notice that they’re telling two STEM profs and a journal editor about citation managers. “This is a solved problem in CS so we don’t understand why it’s not a solved problem in your domain” remains one of the classic unsolved problems in CS.
