#Mastodon 4.6 launched the Newsletters feature. It allows people who do not have a Mastodon account to subscribe to your posts via e-mail. I think this is going to be very useful for organisations who might want to reach out beyond the #fediverse. It has to be enabled explicitly for you by your server admin. This feature is very poorly documented for now, though, yet the details are important: indeed, one wants to avoid spamming their subscribers, who also are not accustomed to Mastodon. So this changes how one posts. Here are some key details to know (according to the source code, and to the best of my understanding, as I am not a Mastodon developer): ∙ The precise criterion of eligibility for a post to be sent in a newsletter seems to be the following: it must be public, and it must not be a reply, unless it is a self-reply. It excludes boosts. ∙ The user can see the number of newsletter subscribers, but not the e-mail addresses. The instance admin can see who subscribes. ∙ There is a (non-configurable) 5 minutes delay before sending the e-mail, and subsequent posts sent within this time frame are batched with the first one into a single newsletter e-mail. This delay also allows one to delete a post before an e-mail is sent, in case of mistake. ∙ More into the details, it seems that the same batch is sent to all subscribers. If an e-mail address is subscribed to several users, then there is still one e-mail per sender: a newsletter e-mail does not mix posts from different senders. This is very useful as it means that one can create threads that will be sent in a single newsletter, if prepared in advance and posted within 5 minutes. And one can reply to questions without spamming subscribers.
