“So, in short: you now have an LLM running on your machine, and any website you visit can make use of it, and whatever processing resources it requires.” The definitive piece on Google participating in the web standards process “the way a bear participates in the ‘camping’ process.”, by @Wilto👏 https://wil.to/posts/googles-prompt-api/

@matthiasott@mastodon.social any idea what can we do as individuals to get them to f*ck off?

“No web standard should require you to agree to an advertising company’s ‘terms of use.’” Yes, yes, yes!💯

@matthiasott @Wilto I was going to call this bear slander… black bears are chill, majestic, and generally mind their business (berries)… but I did get stalked by one last summer and interacted with it in much the same way as I would any android device (shouting “hey [google|bear]!”, banging my cook pot, and chucking rocks at it)

@matthiasott @Wilto The most insane entitled-google-privilege BS to me is this bit: "Gemini Nano is on your device if you’re using Chrome, and it will be again if you remove it, unless you start tearing out wires in ways that the average user of the web can’t. So, in short: you now have an LLM running on your machine, and any website you visit can make use of it, and whatever processing resources it requires."

@matthiasott @Wilto and how much access will those websites get to all those other things you also do on your same laptop?

@matthiasott @Wilto The difference being that I can carry bear spray on hikes. Though I’ve fortunately never had to reach for it - most black bears are pretty content to ignore humans and just keep chowing down on berries. I’d rather deal with them than AI.
