Like a broken clock, even people still on X are right once or twice a day.

@briankrebs@infosec.exchange Whi was that young man hacker who died in detention years ago? Seems like we should remember him. What a waste.

@briankrebs@infosec.exchange the only winning move is not to play aka. Blocking "AI " slop scrapers and sueing the fuck out of every #scraper that disrespects robots.txt like a trespasser akin to State v. Allen… And I don't mean sueing for money, but literally to get execs jailed if they violate a court order to cease and decist such shite.Cuz if the penalty for a crime is a fine it's only illegal for the poor!

@briankrebs@infosec.exchange the EU 2019 Copyright Directive does allow to scrape the Internet, both for research and comercial purposes. This weakening of Copyright is a good thing it makes it possible for all not just big corporations with infinite money who can pay for licensing, to do things that can't just be exclusively controlled by big corporations.

@briankrebs@infosec.exchange The anti-monopoly laws in the USA were created to prevent this sort of ”tail wagging the dog” situations.. However, you’d have to enforce them for there to be any effect. Your corporations are now more powerful than your government. Congratulations.

@briankrebs@infosec.exchange Lots of "fun" collecting from those 15 year olds who by never working under their real names and not using the banks can put any money they make later out of reach of the courts. A strategic bankruptcy was also an effective move in some cases. From my understanding most filesharing lawsuits never collected a dime. Here's an example: RIAA thugs sued a 20 year old and "won" over $600,000, only to be left holding the bag and the legal bills after their target filed Chapter 7 bankruptcy with zero assets. All of the judgment was discharged, the copythugs got zero. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sony_BMG_Music_Entertainment_v._Tenenbaum_(2009) From my position, copyright is not the argument against AI, rather the wholesale gulping of water, electricity, and computer parts is. I will only accept a copyright claim if a product damaged by being passed through AI (or used in ads etc) manages to saturate the market and kill the popular perception of the original.

@briankrebs@infosec.exchange apparently it's already been tested in court. AI doesn't copy, it analyses. It statistically looks for what's next. In the same way a search engine analyses text and stores. Therefore it's fair use. No, I don't like it either. But I can see the technical argument.

@herrbischoff@mastodon.social I do not have and have never had accounts with any of the paid streaming services. One thing about some of us autistic folks: the same music stays interesting so a fixed/local library with slow and infrequent additions works fine. I have kept all electronics I own isolated from the corporate world from Google and Facebook on down. When I was playing, it was a fact that some better musicians were playing only in their own homes than had big-time record contracts. If you were lucky you might hear one of them playing as a session musician at a studio or filling in in some club. They (like myself) were blocked from any distribution bigger than tape sharing, which had limited reach due to generation loss. I and my band did a few club shows in 1993 as "MidKnight" before things fell apart, which is further than many ever got. The industry from its beginnings through that time was a total crapshoot: a few got hugely rich, most got crumbs or nothing. There was even the infamous case of Chess records being sued after refusing to pay royalties owed to Muddy Waters and Willie Dixon. That was some real piracy-by a record company itself.

@herrbischoff@mastodon.social Those past decades are when I was performing, almost half my life ago. That things have changed for many is no surprise. One of the things I am able to do is when something works for me, "pin" it and do not change it without a good reason. Probably an autistic thing. Oh yeah-you did well yourself!
