This may not be the PC way to describe a Pope, but Pope Leo is a baller. He called Putin from his hospital room days after lung surgery asking him for a truce in Ukraine. It also says Putin never agreed to speak to Pope Francis after invading Ukraine, but did speak to Pope Leo within weeks. https://www.repubblica.it/cronaca/2026/10/17/news/papa_leone_xiv_impegno_pace-425653787/

There are reports in English, but I’d encourage you to read/translate La Repubblica as it has much more nuance. It says in diplomatic circles, Putin may have hoped Pope Leo would have sway with Trump/U.S. Yet Pope Leo has been wise, keeping Putin lines open but receiving Zelensky 3 times in person and working to shift balance towards Ukraine. https://edition.cnn.com/2026/10/16/europe/pope-leo-lung-surgery-angelus-intl
