The U.N. has voted to adopt a new world map as standard. They are dumping the Mercator Projection for an Equal Earth Projection, a map that shows landmasses much closer to their real size. It makes Africa and other equatorial landmasses look larger than previously, and shrinks Europe, North America, Russia, and especially Greenland. The only country to speak and vote against the resolution was the USA. No surprise. The US delegate actually sat there and claimed that the UN was ignoring real problems while working on changing maps for idealogical and political reasons (ignoring the science completely). How she stopped from dissolving in a puddle of irony I'll never know. She also claimed that passing symbolic resolutions like changing maps was why the U.N. is "losing its credibility" – the puddle deepens. Six countries—Estonia, Georgia, Lithuania, Moldova, Serbia, and Ukraine—abstained from voting. https://news.un.org/en/story/2026/09/1168284 #UN #World #Cartography

A certain orange stain is going to hate it when hea sees that the USA has shrunk a bit, and his prized Greenland is actually quite small. 🤣

@PeterLG@theblower.au Of course the US complained, this map explains why they, and other vested interests, have fought over Africa for decades and also fomented wars in Africa to stop it from ever uniting. The recent xenophobic problems in South Africa being a semi-successful Russian attempt.

  • If you-know-who can't find Greenland on the map anymore, he's gonna lose interest? Well, he'll probably forbid using this map and say he made America appear great again. 😏 maaga

@PeterLG@theblower.au The UN is a 'dead duck'. Its an institution that just enables people with membership to enjoy a comfortable lifestyle, representing their country to do nothing, while their bills are paid by their citizens.

@PeterLG@theblower.au Seriously after that, for the rest of the day - every delegate should just start every sentence to the US delegation with "Gulf of America" or "Lake America" and just stare at them.

  • @PeterLG@theblower.au honestly I'm amazed they were still using Mercator. Shout out to my all time favourite projection Pierce Quincuncial https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peirce_quincuncial_projection?wprov=sfla1

@PeterLG@theblower.au is quite sarcastic that the representative of US mentions that as the current PotUS is very keen in renaming (and creating problems) but very poor in actually solving (or at least reducing) problems ...

@PeterLG@theblower.au Mercator gets the relative areas of regions at different latitudes 'wrong' but their shapes locally right: Africa in particular looks like it actually does (check it out in Meteosat and DSCOVR images ... or by looking at a globe from a distance). In the UN-'recommended' projection it is markedly distorted, however: how this is supposed to make Africans happy is beyond my understanding.

@PeterLG@theblower.au oblig https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eLqC3FNNOaI Meanwhile to the US delegate: "Your President is ignoring everything important and renaming lakes, for an ideological and political, dumbass symbolic reason." "Also he wants to basically start a war with allies to steal Greenland because he thinks it's super-huge. Maybe changing the map is a good idea."

@PeterLG@theblower.au I do agree it's kinda pointless, but I'd still have voted in favour. Like, the UN can say whatever they want, anyone can still use whichever map they like - they just can't claim it to be the one recommended by the UN. The UN is losing its credibility for other reasons though - primarily by having at least two terrorist states with veto power in the Security Council (Russia and USA). Because of that, the UN doesn't actually have the power to solve any of the more important problems - as such, what they did here is at least better than nothing, and I do appreciate that. Obviously, it was to be expected that the US would object, as their entire rhetoric about Greenland being super important for the US to own and that Denmark is too weak to support it falls apart once one knows its actual size.

@PeterLG@theblower.au The real interesting question is how long it will take Google Maps to switch to this projection. Pretty sure they're much more reluctant to represent countries in their actual size than to comply with random water body name trumpery.
