My personal preference is for ballot marking devices that produce a human-readable paper ballot that is counted with an optical scanner - the ballot marking device provides accessibility, the paper ballot provides accountability, and the optical scanner is more accurate than hand counting.
It does rely on people double-checking their paper ballot before submitting it, on public availability and auditing of the code used to generate and decode any machine-specific ballot summaries, and on independent evaluation and auditing of the optical scanner.
