I like finding and fixing bugs in 52-year-old software, especially when all later versions retain the bug. #unix #vintagecomputing #retrocomputing

Whew! I just finished porting 2,852 lines of PDP-11 assembly to C by hand over the past week! This is for form/fed, a form letter editor and generator with template substitutions, introduced in 1971. It's the largest UNIX utility that was never ported to C, and has since been forgotten. 1/6 #unix #retrocomputing #vintagecomputing #reverseengineering

@thalia@discuss.systems I took aim at something that may be as old as 54-year-old software this year, which is notorious for having retained very old behaviour. I'm going to get a machine that has enough oomph to compile #NetBSD from source on, and do a NetBSD patch, to go along with the others, at some point. It doesn't really count as #retrocomputing when one is patching current GNU #coreutils and relatively recent FreeBSDs, though. • @thalia@discuss.systems Using bits of the V7 user code we ended up finding bugs in the traditional dc and in sh that still exist today. Amazing how long bugs can hide
