i'm surprised no one has acknowledged the elephant in the room here yet, so i guess i will i reinstalled internet explorer 4.0 for unix on my sun ultra 10. i think i had it before on here but the install was kinda broken and didn't launch more than once per boot. it seems to be working better now. i also tried installing IE5 earlier, but it seems too incompatible with solaris 8 to work properly. the way i got it to display on my main computer was via X11 forwarding over SSH by the way, installing IE4 is really weird, at least on solaris 8. when you run the self extracting archive, it tries to pull the files from a different file with garbage characters appended to the end of it for some reason. the characters change depending on what directory you try to install it to, which is very strange. i don't think anyone's ever documented this before. the only way i know how to fix it is to actually rename the installer file to include the extra garbage characters then run it. there might also be some other way to extract it, but i have no idea what format it is. it's not a tar archive, so i presume it's probably a cab file or something, but i'm guessing it's some proprietary self extractor format microsoft developed that doesn't have any software which can read it.
