While I certainly agree that chatbots are not conscious and do not possess persistent selfhoods, I think it's better to focus on the specific evidentiary claims put forward by chatbot consciousness believers than to claim that unproven theories (including my own) of consciousness exclude them from mentality.

Given that no machine with recursive selfhood has been demonstrated to exist, the burden of proof for chatbot consciousness rests upon its advocates--not on their opponents. And the proponents' claims are extremely weak.
