VOY S5 E24: "Relativity" After a string of middling to disappointing episodes, "Relativity" is a delight. It's one of the better Star Trek time travel episodes. The cold open is great, showing us what appears to be a flashback until we see Jeri Ryan at the end, sans Borg jewellery. It does the 'open in medias res' thing without quite doing the lazy '3 days earlier!' thing. I mean, we do go back to the beginning, from 7's point of view, but the episode's internal timeline keeps moving forward . It avoids the cliches of the time loop episode, but it does give us some of the pleasures. We see three "time frames" exactly twice. The twist of Braxton being the villain is clever (and I'd completely forgotten it since I watched the episode for the first time). The extra lagniappe at the end, where it's Janeway who has to go back and fix the fractured timeline, is fun. 7 confronting Season 3 Janeway is fun. You may be surprised to learn that Jay Karnes, who plays Lt. Ducane, is actually a clone from the same vat as Stephen Collins. Also, the temporal anomalies that lead up to the initial destruction of Voyager were also a lot of fun. You know what word keeps coming up when I talk about this episode? "fun"! Oh, and Braxton complaining about being stuck for 30 years with "those post-industrial savages" hits a little differently now that we know exactly what those thirty years were like! Who can blame him for trying to destroy Voyager? #VOY #startrek
