I'm a fierce LLM critic but I'm getting just as annoyed at all the LLM vigilante detectives in the book space. How about you all do something useful rather than speculating if Daggermouth was generated. Here's a hint. Read the book. It wasn't. I know it's not a nine second video clip but I believe in you! You have the power! In my personal life, I've had people just stop publishing things because an unusual metaphor told someone the thing was generated. And just LMAO at using LLM detection things. I never take you all seriously that use any form of LLM detection scams. Every single one of these LLM vigilantes is doing marketing for them. just to fuck with you all, I'm going to use more Em Dashes because you are just as annoying. It's not proof, it's marketing. In this case, as just one example out of many, I hope the Atlantic gets sued for this garbage. https://www.theatlantic.com/technology/2026/07/daggermouth-novel-bestseller-ai/688067/ #Bookstodon #Books

@WeirdWriter@caneandable.social I'm likely wrong (it happens!), but 'I have read' that the biggest problem with so-called 'slop-detectors' is that they'll say 'this contains stuff that is in the training data, therefore must be slop'. But given that basically everything is 'in the training data' these days, anything that scans as well written will get pinged, no? Is there a 'non-slop' way to detect 'slop' which is, say, 90% accurate? Probably not IMO.

  • @WeirdWriter@caneandable.social Are these LLM investigators just a vocal minority? I see it happen too but I'm not really in any book spaces. Of course it has an effect, as you've said, but I can't imagine it's an actually large contingent of people.

@WeirdWriter@caneandable.social I'm starting a writing-heavy graduate degree and don't use LLMs at all for it, or for any personal writing, for that matter. I'm very worried at the seemingly inevitable eventual possible accusation that I must have used an LLM in my academic writing, because how on earth will I disprove it!?

@WeirdWriter@caneandable.social At this point the mdash has standing to sue just about everyone on the internet for hate speech.
