Spicy take: the purpose of developing free or open-source software is now effectively to provide free labor to probabilistic automation companies that they can ingest into their models. So why would anyone choose to develop free software for political reasons anymore? All the political reasons in favor have been vitiated by the enclosure of the commons. At the very least, how can someone who is ideologically committed to free software also not be ideologically committed to dismantling probabilistic automation, or at least declining to consume probabilistic automation products?

What’s the point of writing code that anyone can read and learn from if no one will actually read it because they’ve surrendered their agency to the matrix multiplication calculator?

@tjc@weirder.earth this particular sadness feels to me like just an escalation of a decades-old providing-free-labor to monopolists problem - in 2016 it was contributing to free software so AWS could offer a metered version of it to their customers. curious what feels different to you here.
