Supra-supramaximal inspiration! An exercise that is 100% effective in treating hiccups for everyone who is able to do it (according to the one study we have):
> First, exhale completely, then inhale a deep breath. Wait 10 seconds, then—without exhaling—inhale a little more. Wait another five seconds, then top up the breath again. Finally, exhale. Generally, you will find that your singultus is gone.

Works for me and my partner. Imagine if science had funding.

@skyfaller@jawns.club If only--I had 3 bouts of 2+ hours each over 24hrs last week. This helped a little, but they didn't disappear. Less painful, though, since there's less change in volume if it hits when I'm already "full".

@skyfaller@jawns.club the one that works most reliably for me is drinking from the far side of a glass of water - maybe because it gradually increases the lung pressure, same as the method you describe.

@skyfaller@jawns.club I've also heard that digital stimulation of the vargus nerve via the anus is effective, but I've never had to try because this breathing trick has been reliable.
