The Mayans sacrificed their firstborn to appease the gods so as to stem the drought and to bring the rain. Existential crises have the tendency to bring forth the best and the worst in humans. Over the past decade, though, only the worse aspects of humanity had come out and played.

@AmenZwa@mathstodon.xyz I doubt that this comparison would be fair. Religious sacrifice at least has the veil of higher good and benefit of the community. Debt from using chat bots sounds more like mindless consumerism and lack of self-control. Both are stupid, but different in several ways. As for the crises, I agree. The doom and gloom that the news offer these days is hard to resist or redirect into something creative or at least soothing.
