@sjslocombe@mathstodon.xyz Oof, tough one. They're really companion pieces. I did the audiobook, and was glad I went that way. It felt like the story and dialogue was written to be performed. Not sure it would be the same on the page. The movie is gorgeous, and does a nice job of condensing the story for runtime, but some details will make more sense if you've read the book. If you're gonna discuss it with people who've read the book, I'd say read the book. Then decide if you're somehow not excited to see it on screen.

@toddz@social.linux.pizza Many thanks. The movie is always a let down if I've read the book. I learned this in school, where occasionally we were obliged to do both. The movie is shorter, so they cut a lot out, and what's left never matches the movie in my head - the characters are all wrong, the settings, all of it. I've honestly never understood wanting to experience both the book and the movie - and sometimes the musical, too. 🤷‍♀️ To each their own.
