Science fiction AI and philosophy about “automotons” are completely different (and fictional) things from ChatGPT et al.
Chatbots were trained on text. They literally have no concept of pain or suffering outside of the words used to describe those things.

Broadly speaking, yes? In a textbook or paper, I think it would be reasonable to credit them as ‘early speculation of AI’, and LLMs as an implementation. The wikipedia page on AI does this.
