Our latest design release generated a bit of a conversation about whether or not STEP files are meaningfully open-source.

@pronk@mastodon.social I think it’s disingenuous to call it open source. No one calls step files source because no one works in step files. You export step files FROM the source. If you want to call it open source you should release the source. It’s common in the open source world to release both the source and a step file for those unable to open the original source but the source is always preferable.
