Spotify notified me that they are removing a bunch of old podcast episodes of mine from their platform for copyright infringement. These episodes use songs from Kevin MacLeod, who famously publishes all his songs under a CC license. Now, here's the kicker: one of the episodes is a lesson about copyright law, and goes into great depth explaining the legal framework that allows us to use Kevin's music without asking his permission. 😆

The beauty of podcasts' decentralized publishing is that this mistake doesn't take down our episodes; only Spotify listeners will miss out on seeing them listed. The lesson here being, don't use apps that try to meddle with your relationship with the publishers you want to follow; it should act like a simple user agent, grabbing the content you tell it to and presenting it to you. Here are my recs for podcast players: https://thenexus.tv/episodes/so79/ And the lesson on Copyright: https://thenexus.tv/episodes/ted20/

@ianrbuck@mspsocial.net so curious to know if Spotify will remove my parody. My aggregator doesn't seem to offer options for 'I got permission from the artist' even though US copyright law says you can. I'm in New Zealand where parodies aren't legal yet and the artist did not reply to my request. But yes, I need to listen to your podcast. I have added it to my pod catcher (which is not Spotify).
