On the first image you can see some artifacts at the edges: when the gel roller draws over an existing line, it will sometimes stop the ink flow. moving back onto clear paper, the ink will usually start flowing again after a short distance. I suspect the inked parts have low friction, so the little ball in the nub stops rolling, stopping the ink flow.
