New satellite imagery obtained by Bellingcat reveals the full extent of tree felling on a Washington DC golf course that has been eyed for development by President Trump. 430 trees were reportedly cut down with little notice last weekend, undermining attempts to protect the site. The satellite pictures detail changes across the East Potomac Golf Links. A judge has now banned any further tree removals until later this month. https://www.bellingcat.com/news/us-canada/2026/10/15/satellite-images-sh...

Letter from Georgia Sothern, a renowned #burlesque dancer of the 1940s, to H.L. Mencken: "In recent years there has been a great deal of uninformed criticism of my profession. Most of it is without foundation and arises because of the unfortunate word strip-teasing, which creates the wrong connotations in the mind of the public. I feel sure that if you could coin a new and more palatable word to describe this art, the objections would vanish and I and my colleagues would have easier go...

I don't post much about US electoral politics, but this seems like evidence of a big shift: AIPAC "will no longer issue endorsements, make direct PAC contributions or earmark donations to candidates." https://www.dropsitenews.com/p/un-rafah-gaza-israel-php-flaws-websites-aipac-end-endorsements Instead, they'll informally recommend candidates "worthy of support" for individuals to contribute to directly. Their super PAC will continue, and pr...

Thinking about American culture. In a backward way, the fact this artist is a footnote instead of a chapter title in America's cultural history just shows the amount of vitality and talent. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3NFywQdeKSo I mean, think about how these sounds must have hit a British crowd in 1964. And her solo at 2:00. It's all so good. Sister Rosetta's certainly not forgotten. But she's also not celebrated on the level of Aretha Franklin, Johnny Ca...

Last week I witnessed a hit-and-run right in front of me. A silver Honda Accord came barreling into the intersection from a side street and hit the car in front of us, causing another crash beside us. I hardly had time to process what had happened when I noticed the Accord was not stopping, but picking up speed and fleeing. The people in the two disabled vehicles next to me appeared to be okay, so I pushed ahead, careful to keep a safe distance, and in the end was able to get the plate number an...

RE: https://mastodon.social/@hannorein/117486732467694195 I agree - I think it is very useful to reframe "Open access" and "Science as a public good" in terms of Science as an Intellectual Commons. This makes it clear that science is not some abstract entity, but a collective project created and curated by the broad scientific community. Samuel Moore makes the case well in his book "Publishing beyond the market - Open Access, Care and the Commons&...
